Before you release the project

  1. Define the function, environment and the question this batch must answer.
  2. Specify material grade, geometry, quantity, finish and the dimensions that control fit.
  3. Agree the inspection method and the evidence required to accept the parts.
  4. Record the drawing revision and approval before production begins.

Common planning questions

Should I select a process before defining the application?

Define environment, loads, fit, assembly and validation requirements first. These requirements often eliminate unsuitable materials or processes.

Does a prototype prove regulatory or end-use compliance?

Not by itself. Application-specific testing and the required documentation must be planned separately from manufacturing the sample.
